West Hylebos Wetland

West Hylebos Wetland

I took a ride to the West Hylebos Wetland today. It was once a state park, but was transferred to the city of Federal Way about 5 years ago. It's a nice easy walk, less than 2 miles of trails in total. Almost all of it is raised boardwalk over the wetlands. There are a couple of different lakes in the park. The park is small, but beautiful. It's situated between four major thoroughfares, so the sound of traffic is never far away. But it's well in the background. You can sit on one of the many benches and simply listen to the sound of the birds, insects and many animals that make the park their home. I plan on going back at different times of the year, just to see how the forest changes with the seasons. After the visit to the park, I rode my bike up the Green River Valley, across the Green River Gorge and out to the far end of the highway before I rode back. I was out there a week ago with John, but there was some heavy snow since then, and there was a lot of snow still on the ground. Fortunately for me, none of it was on the road. But it sure did get cold as the elevation climbed. I enjoyed the ride, but I was glad to head back.
